What will happen to the money as Lindsay Clancy fundraiser reaches $1.2 million after mistrial

More than $1.2 million has poured into a fundraiser connected to Lindsay Clancy’s family.

But after the dramatic mistrial in her Massachusetts murder case, one question is looming larger than ever: what happens to all that money if the case goes back to court?

The Lindsay Clancy case has gripped Massachusetts and drawn attention far beyond the state. On January 24, 2023, Clancy killed her three children — five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan — at their family home in Duxbury, Massachusetts.

Clancy later attempted to take her own life and suffered severe injuries that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She said she experienced an auditory hallucination telling her to carry out the acts and felt unable to resist.

She was subsequently charged with three counts of murder. Her defense argued that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder at the time and therefore should not be held criminally responsible.

The case became one of the most closely watched criminal trials in the U.S., sparking widespread discussion about postpartum mental illness, mental health and criminal responsibility.

Meanwhile, a high-profile fundraiser connected to the case continues to draw widespread attention.

The online fundraiser supporting Clancy’s parents has now increased its goal from $2 million to $3 million, following the mistrial in her closely watched murder case.

Brandee Mulligan, organizer of the “Musgrove Family Fund” on GoFundMe, announced the change Friday, pointing to the extended legal proceedings as the main reason. Clancy’s parents, Mike and Paula Musgrove, are expected to remain away from their Connecticut home for the foreseeable future as they continue supporting their daughter.

“I’ve decided to raise the goal of this fundraiser since this process has been extended, so is the time Paula and Mike will remain away from their home, continuing to carry the costs that come with being there for their daughter every day,” Mulligan wrote.

Musgrove is Clancy’s former maiden name, and according to the fundraiser, the couple moved from Connecticut to Massachusetts so they could remain close to their daughter during the lengthy legal proceedings.

The family has also faced significant expenses along the way, including travel, accommodation and other costs associated with staying near Clancy and supporting her through the case.

Why did the fundraiser suddenly grow?

The GoFundMe initially set a $1 million fundraising goal, but donations surged after Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial on September 4 when the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict.

According to Rolling Stone, the fundraiser had collected more than $1.2 million, including a $5,000 contribution from an anonymous donor.

Organizer Brandee Mulligan said the new goal reflects the possibility that the legal battle may continue if prosecutors pursue another trial.

The fundraiser was created with the Musgrove family’s permission and is intended to help Clancy’s parents with their expenses. It is not described as a fund directly paying for Clancy’s legal defense.

What happens to the money after the mistrial?

The mistrial does not mean the criminal case is over.

Prosecutors could seek a retrial, which would potentially leave Clancy’s parents facing even more financial and emotional strain as they continue supporting their daughter. A status hearing is scheduled for September 29, when the next steps in the case are expected to become clearer.

Clancy remains in psychiatric care as the legal proceedings continue.

Will people keep donating?

The decision to increase the fundraising goal from $1 million to $3 million signals that supporters are preparing for the possibility of a much longer legal battle.

At the same time, the fundraiser has attracted controversy, with other campaigns also appearing online in connection with the case.

GoFundMe has said it is reviewing fundraisers related to the Clancy case and will remove campaigns that violate its terms of service.

The mistrial means there is still no final verdict in the case.

After deliberating for several days, the jury failed to reach the unanimous decision required to resolve the charges. Prosecutors must now determine whether to pursue another trial, while Clancy’s defense team weighs its next steps.

And for her parents, the uncertainty continues.

For now, the Musgrove Family Fund remains open as they wait for answers about their daughter’s future — and whether this heartbreaking legal battle is truly nearing its end, or only beginning another chapter.

Common back-pain drug may be linked to higher dementia risk, large study finds

A pain medication that millions of Americans rely on for chronic back pain may come with a hidden risk: a significantly higher chance of developing dementia or other cognitive problems, according to a major new study. Compared 26,000 adults Researchers from Case Western Reserve University and several partner institutions analyzed medical records from 68 health systems across the U.S., comparing 26,414 adults prescribed gabapentin for persistent low-back pain with a matched group who had similar pain — but didn’t take the drug. Their finding was sobering: Adults who received six or more gabapentin prescriptions were 29% more likely to be diagnosed with dementia and 85% more likely to develop mild cognitive impairment (MCI) within 10 years. The risk wasn’t limited to older adults. In fact, it was younger Americans who saw the most dramatic increases. Younger adults saw shocking risk increases For people normally considered decades away from dementia: Ages 35–49 taking gabapentin ha...

Horrible childhood event shaped this Hollywood star’s journey

For years, this actress has delivered award-winning performances on screen, earning recognition and icon status in Hollywood. Yet her early life was anything but glamorous. Her biological father abandoned her before she was even born, and at 15, she was raped in her own home by a man who claimed he had paid her mother $500. Kidnapped by her stepfather Born in 1962 in Roswell, New Mexico, this Hollywood icon was the child of a brief union between her teen mother, Virginia, and an Air Force airman, Charles Harmon Sr. Her father deserted her then-18-year-old mother after a two-month marriage, long before she was born. Instead, when the actress was just three months old, her mother married a newspaper advertising salesman. Because her stepfather often switched jobs, the family relocated frequently. ”I was desperate for a sense of belonging so I adopted different characters wherever I went,” she once reflected. Her early years were marked by constant moves, fueled by her parents’ alco...
