13-year-old football player dies after going into cardiac arrest during practice

 

It was supposed to be an ordinary football practice for a 13-year-old boy who had so much life ahead of him.

He ran a single lap around the field.

And then, without warning, everything changed.

Caden Sorrell, a student at Northwest Guilford Middle School in Greensboro, North Carolina, went into cardiac arrest during football practice on Friday. His family rushed to be by his side, hoping and praying he would pull through.

Three days later, their worst fears came true.

Caden died Sunday at Cone Hospital, leaving his family, teammates and friends devastated. His older sister, Vanessa Clark, said there had been no obvious warning that something was wrong with her brother.

“He was a picture of health. We don’t know why [it happened], but it did,” Clark told WXII.

‘Caden was an angel from heaven’

Vanessa was shopping at Walmart when she received the phone call that changed her life.

“I was actually in the middle of Walmart when I got the call. My mom called me, and I immediately rushed to him,” she said.

The family is now left holding onto memories of a boy they describe as loving, kind and full of life.

“Caden was an angel from heaven. He was brilliant, sweet, smart, kind. He made everybody around him feel loved,” Clark said.

Caden was one of five siblings and had a twin brother. He wore No. 42 for the Northwest Guilford Vikings and was also a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan.

For Clark, one memory stands out above the rest — a playful wrestling match between the siblings.

“We were trying to wrestle because I thought I could take him, and I couldn’t. He taught me the hard way that I could not, but it was just the laughter that we shared together,” she recalled.

His family is searching for answers

As Caden’s loved ones mourn, they are also trying to understand what caused the sudden cardiac arrest.

A fundraiser has been established to help the family with medical and funeral expenses. The money will also help pay for medical evaluations for Caden’s siblings to determine whether an underlying genetic condition could have played a role in his death.

Clark said the family continued praying for Caden throughout his hospitalization.

“I was praying for him, and I hoped that he got better, that he was healed — which he was spiritually,” Clark said. “I’m there for him, and I love him.”

The tragedy has also sparked conversations about access to automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, at sporting facilities. A family friend said they hope Caden’s story can help make these potentially lifesaving devices more accessible during youth sports.

A community left grieving

Northwest Guilford Middle School principal CeCe Matson asked the school community to remember Caden’s family during the heartbreaking days ahead.

“As we grieve this loss, let us lean on one another and extend compassion to those around us. A caring heart and gentle presence can mean so much right now,” she wrote.

For the people who knew him, Caden was far more than a football player. He was a brother, a son, a teammate, a friend — and a young boy whose laughter and kindness left an impression on everyone around him.

Now, his family is left with memories they will carry for the rest of their lives. RIP Caden!
