Louisiana girl, 8, dies from rare ‘brain-eating’ amoeba found in warm freshwater



 For Lillian Smart, a little girl remembered for her bright smile and joyful spirit, a simple day in the water ended in an unimaginable tragedy.

The 8-year-old Louisiana girl died over the weekend after developing an extremely rare infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba.”

Health officials believe Lillian was likely exposed while swimming in Lake Claiborne in north Louisiana.

Her parents, Daniel and Rebecca Smart, shared the heartbreaking news in a Facebook post Sunday.

“Last night Lillian ran from our arms to the arms of Jesus,” they wrote. “The injuries to her brain were too severe for her little body to recover from. Everyone did everything they could to keep her here.”

They added: “We are heartbroken and honestly do not know what to do next…”

Lillian had been hospitalized since August 15 after becoming infected with Naegleria fowleri, according to reports. Despite doctors’ efforts to save her, the infection caused devastating damage to her brain, and she could not recover.

The Louisiana Department of Health confirmed that the state had recorded its first known Naegleria fowleri infection since 2013. Officials said Lillian’s case was most likely connected to swimming in Lake Claiborne.


The amoeba naturally occurs in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, ponds and canals. It can enter the body when contaminated water travels up the nose and reaches the brain. The resulting illness, known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis, is extremely rare but is nearly always fatal.

There have been only around 180 confirmed infections in the United States between 1937 and 2025, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.

And while the story carries an important warning for families, those who knew Lillian want her remembered for far more than the illness that took her life.

She was known throughout the Ruston community as a happy, loving child who seemed to bring a smile wherever she went.

“She’s just always a happy child. She’s just as happy a place she goes,” Patricia Willis, owner of The Children’s Shoppe & Peach Lemonade, said. “Every time you see her, she has a smile on her face.”

Even as Lillian fought for her life in the hospital, her community rallied around her. Just six days after she was admitted, people gathered to celebrate her birthday and support the family through a fundraiser called Love for Lillian.

Now, her family and community are left grieving a little girl whose life was far too short.
