Citizen Smith and Doctor Who actress dies aged 76

 

A familiar face from beloved British television has died, leaving behind decades of memorable performances and a career that touched generations of viewers.

Cheryl Hall, the actress best known for Citizen Smith and Doctor Who, has died at the age of 76.

The heartbreaking news was shared by actor Robin Askwith, who dated Hall for three years in the 1970s. In an emotional tribute, he remembered her not simply as a talented actress, but as a woman whose personality and courage left a lasting mark on everyone around her.



“What a force of nature she was. A really innovative working class, charismatic actress coming out of the late 60s. Brave in every way.

“And now I have the sad news she has passed away. I am devastated…

“She was my beginning. RIP Cheryl Hall.”

Hall began acting in the late 1960s, building a career that would take her from British sitcoms to some of television’s most iconic dramas.

Her breakthrough came in 1971 with On the Buses, and she went on to appear in the 1973 Doctor Who story Carnival of Monsters as Shirna, a carnival worker and glamorous assistant.

She became particularly well known to sitcom audiences as Shirley Johnson on Citizen Smith, where she played the girlfriend of Robert Lindsay’s famously rebellious character, Wolfie Smith. Their on-screen romance eventually became a real-life one as well, with the pair marrying in 1974 and remaining together until 1980. In 1980, Lindsay left Cheryl and began a relationship with actress Diana Weston.

Hall continued working steadily throughout her career, appearing in shows including The Bill, Poirot, Inspector Morse, Grange Hill, Casualty, Silent Witness, EastEnders and Lucky Feller.

Her film credits included To Catch a Spy, The Love Ban and Three for All.

She also came remarkably close to becoming part of Doctor Who history in another way. Hall was among the actresses considered for the role of Jo Grant, the Doctor’s companion, before Katy Manning ultimately landed the part. Producer Barry Letts later remembered Hall and cast her in Carnival of Monsters.

Beyond acting, Hall entered politics and stood as the Labour candidate for Canterbury in the 1997 general election. She later served on Kent County Council and became leader of the Labour group.

“We need more women. We are desperately short of female representation. Women need a voice,” Cheryl once said.

During her time in politics, she balanced public life and raising her two sons while continuing to pursue her acting career.

Common back-pain drug may be linked to higher dementia risk, large study finds
