Colorado Football Quarterback Dominiq Ponder Passes Away at 23 — Details

Colorado football is mourning the loss of quarterback Dominiq Ponder. Authorities have since released details about the circumstances surrounding his death.

The University of Colorado (CU) confirmed Sunday evening, March 1, 2026, that Dominiq Ponder died at 23, a devastating loss for teammates, coaches, and the wider community.

Colorado Buffaloes Football head coach Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders later addressed the tragedy in a public statement. Tributes from across the program and the college football world soon followed online.

Tributes Pour in as Details Emerge

On X, Sanders asked for prayers and comfort for Ponder's family, friends, and loved ones, describing him as someone he cared about deeply.

He said Ponder was respected within the program and viewed as a natural leader, and expressed faith that he was now in God's care while asking for strength for those grieving.

Authorities later clarified the circumstances surrounding his death. According to USA TODAY Sports, Ponder died in a single-car crash in Boulder County around 3 a.m. on March 1.

The Colorado State Patrol said a 23-year-old male driving a 2023 Tesla lost control on a curve, crossed into opposite lanes, struck a guardrail and a utility pole, and rolled. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

As the details became public, the focus shifted to remembering the young quarterback’s journey.

How the Program Responded

The CU Athletics Department confirmed Ponder's death, saying he died in a car accident early Sunday morning. The junior quarterback from Miami and Naples, Florida, was entering his third season with the Buffaloes.

He appeared in two games during the 2025 season and made his collegiate debut against Arizona. Ponder transferred to Colorado after previous stops at Bethune-Cookman and Georgia Tech and redshirted his first year in Boulder.

Ponder's family requested privacy during this time.

In addition to his earlier post on X, Sanders said Ponder was known for his passion and willingness to go beyond what was asked of him. Athletic Director Fernando Lovo said Ponder reflected qualities valued by the program, including leadership and toughness.

CU Athletics also made counseling resources available to student-athletes and staff as the team processed the loss.

Long before arriving in Boulder, Ponder's football journey had already taken shape.

From Florida Standout to Buffalo Quarterback

Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 195 pounds, Ponder was rated a three-star quarterback in Florida, according to the Bethune-Cookman athletics website. He played at Carol City High School in Opa Locka and Naples High School before finishing at Myrtle Beach Collegiate Academy.

As a sophomore at Naples High, he threw for 511 yards and 10 touchdowns and rushed for 356 yards and three scores. He also drew recruiting interest from Florida International, Liberty, and Southern Miss.

Born on December 2, 2002, Ponder intended to major in criminology.

A Loss That Continues to Sting

In a Facebook tribute, the Colorado football program said it was grieving Ponder's passing and honoring the life and spirit he brought to Boulder.

The message emphasized that he would always be remembered as part of the team, describing him as "Forever a Buffalo."

In a post on X, Colorado Buffaloes reporter Scott Procter described the news as devastating ahead of spring practices, underscoring the timing of the tragedy for the program.

Ponder's death comes just days after another college athlete lost his life in a separate tragedy.

As previously reported, Radford University mourned the loss of Freshman Baseball Player Joey Raccuia, who tragically passed away at such a tender age.

A Sudden and Shocking Loss

Authorities confirmed the incident happened not far from Radford's baseball stadium, a place that had quickly become his home away from home.

According to reporting by The Roanoke Times, police officers and rescue workers immediately provided medical help, but Raccuia was pronounced dead on the scene, and no additional information was released on Wednesday by the Radford Police Department.

The location alone has left many shaken, for teammates and fans, it's impossible not to think about how close he was to the field where he competed.

Photos of Raccuia show a focused and determined young athlete. In one image, he's captured mid-stride on the field in his navy Radford uniform, glove in hand, looking every bit the dedicated competitor.

Another portrait shows him in a red Highlanders jersey and navy cap, offering a soft smile to the camera. The combination of intensity on the field and warmth off it makes the loss feel even heavier.

A Heartfelt Tribute from Radford Baseball

The university's baseball program shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, posting a powerful memorial graphic. The image features Raccuia in his red Highlanders jersey, glove ready, with the words "IN LOVING MEMORY JOEY RACCUIA" emblazoned across the bottom.

In their statement, the team wrote:

"We are heartbroken to share news of the passing of Joey Raccuia. Joey's impact on our team, this community and [sic] all the lives he touched went far beyond the playing field, and we miss him deeply."

The Incident That Claimed the Beloved Baseball Player's Life

As details slowly emerge, the tragedy has taken on an even more heartbreaking dimension. Raccuia wasn't just any freshman athlete finding his footing in college baseball; he was the son of former Radford University Head Baseball Coach Joe Raccuia, making his presence on the team deeply personal for the entire program.

According to People, the Virginia college freshman died after being involved in a fatal car accident. On Thursday, February 26, Radford University's baseball team confirmed via social media that Raccuia had been killed. He was just 19 years old.

The beloved baseballer played as a middle infielder and right-handed pitcher, balancing versatility with grit. His team says his presence extended far beyond stats and box scores.

A Community Forever Changed

The fact that the accident occurred so close to the stadium adds a haunting layer to the tragedy, as for many, the field will now forever hold a different meaning.

At such a young age, Raccuia built a legacy rooted in family, community, and passion for the game. And while his time in this world was heartbreakingly short, his impact will last far longer than any single season.

At this time, we wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to the entire Raccuia family, their friends, community, loved ones, and all who knew and loved the dearly missed baseball player as they mourn such a significant loss. We hope for their healing amid their time of grief. RIP, dear Raccuia.

More people are coming out as Aegosexual – here’s what it means

As discussions around sexuality become more layered, so does the vocabulary used to describe them. One term now drawing attention is aegosexual, an “identity-less” experience that’s defined by “disconnection.” With gender and sexuality now part of everyday conversation, it’s no surprise that a growing number of new labels are finding their way into the mainstream. Aegosexuality, part of the asexual spectrum, describes people who experience arousal or desire without wanting to engage in sexual activity. At its core, the identity centers on a disconnect between experiencing attraction and wanting to personally act on it. ‘Disconnection’ The concept was first introduced in 2012 by Canadian psychologist and sexologist Anthony Bogaert, who originally referred to it as “autochorissexualism.” Bogaert described the experience as an “identity-less sexuality,” that’s “characterized by a disconnection between their sense of self and a sexual object or target.” In practical terms, someone wh...

Common back-pain drug may be linked to higher dementia risk, large study finds

A pain medication that millions of Americans rely on for chronic back pain may come with a hidden risk: a significantly higher chance of developing dementia or other cognitive problems, according to a major new study. Compared 26,000 adults Researchers from Case Western Reserve University and several partner institutions analyzed medical records from 68 health systems across the U.S., comparing 26,414 adults prescribed gabapentin for persistent low-back pain with a matched group who had similar pain — but didn’t take the drug. Their finding was sobering: Adults who received six or more gabapentin prescriptions were 29% more likely to be diagnosed with dementia and 85% more likely to develop mild cognitive impairment (MCI) within 10 years. The risk wasn’t limited to older adults. In fact, it was younger Americans who saw the most dramatic increases. Younger adults saw shocking risk increases For people normally considered decades away from dementia: Ages 35–49 taking gabapentin ha...
